Meals on Wheels Greater Spokane County is actively monitoring the wildfires and evacuation activity affecting our region. Our team is working throughout the day to safely continue serving seniors while adapting ot changing conditions, road closures, and evacuation notices.

This page serves as our central source for the latest information, including service updates, volunteer needs, route changes, and community resources. We will update this page as conditions evolve.

9:00am

As of 2:30pm yesterday (08/11) all evacuation levels were lifted for the Spokane Complex Fires. MOWGSC has returned to regular operations

08/11

9:20am

We are continuing to monitor the Spokane Complex Fires. Currently, we anticipate Route 312 will be undeliverable on Thursday. The rest of our routes have resumed regular delivery

08/09

2:40pm

Most evacuation zones have been lifted from Level 3 to Level 1. Our team will be evaluating zone changes first thing in the morning. Delivery service will likely be resumed for any clients who have returned to their homes that were previously evacuated. Our team will be connecting with these clients to ensure they have returned home safely.

Evacuation zones have been renamed on the Watch Duty app. These updated labels will be what is used in our updates

We've learned that the evacuation zone affecting Route 039, west of Mill Rd, has been downgraded from level 3 to level 2. If this holds through the weekend, we will be resuming partial delivery for Route 039

Evacuation zones for the Spokane Complex Fires are no longer being updated via the Watch Duty app. You can see up to date evacuation zones HERE.

Routes 312 and 039 remain undeliverable due to their locations in Level 3 evacuation zones

We have been informed that Corbin Senior Center has reopened for service. 

08/05 

9:30am

We have been informed that Corbin Senior Center has closed due to the fires. There will be no Senior Cafe meal service at Corbin Senior Center for the rest of the week. 

8:30am

Route 312, located in Five Mile Prairie, North Indian Trail, & Seven Mile, is located in a Level 3 evacuation zone. We will be unable to deliver to any clients still in the area.

We have currently resumed service for route 040. Clients located along E Hawthorne Rd and Country Homes.

08/04 @ 3:30pm

We have currently resumed service for route 041. Any clients located between Market St and Spokane Corridor. And North of E Stoneman Rd.

COMMUNITY RESOURCES

SpokAnimal - accepting donations of dog, cat, kitten & puppy food, and blankets and towels. They are also seeking foster homes for animals displaced by the fires. 

 

Partners Inland Northwest is accepting donations of nonperishable food, clothing, diapers, and hygiene items at its Spokane Valley location (10814 E. Broadway Ave.) that will be distributed to those affected by the fire. 

 

The Spokane Homeless Coalition is accepting donations at 527 S. Cannon of pre-packaged food, homemade sandwiches, water, hydration packets, blankets (used but washed), underwear/socks, men’s clothing, and women’s clothing.

 

Gonzaga University is collecting donations of food, comfort items, personal care items, household basics and more at its Hemmingson Center (702 E Desmet Ave.). 

 

The YMCA of the Inland Northwest is opening all local branches to evacuees who need showers or a temporary place to rest. A valid photo ID is required for access.

The following locations are participating:

  • Central YMCA, 930 North Monroe Street

  • North YMCA, 10727 North Newport Highway

  • South YMCA, 2921 East 57th Avenue

  • Valley YMCA, 2421 North Discovery Place

The facilities close at 8 p.m. on Sunday and are open Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

 

The Spokane County Fair & Expo Center continues to care for animals displaced by the Spokane Area Fires and is asking for donations of animal feed.

Officials said they have received an overwhelming amount of cat and dog food and are no longer in need of those items.

Instead, they are requesting donations of:

  • Horse feed and other large animal feed 

  • Gerbil and hamster food

  • Ferret food

  • Rabbit food

  • Cleaning supplies that are disinfectants like Clorox/Lysol 

  • Other small animal feed

The fairgrounds are serving as an emergency shelter for animals evacuated because of the fires. Officials said that these specialty food items are urgently needed as more animals continue to arrive.

Community members wishing to help are encouraged to donate these items rather than cat or dog food, which is currently well stocked.
